The tuner does not react when I play

FretWise needs microphone access. On iPhone and iPad go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and turn on FretWise. On Android go to Settings → Apps → FretWise → Permissions → Microphone. Then play close to the device in a quiet room.

A lesson will not accept a chord I am sure of

Chord listening is less certain than tuning. Tune first, strum a little slower and let every string ring. The bars under "What the app hears" show which notes the app is picking up, and it points at any string that is not sounding — usually a finger touching a neighbouring string.

The tuner reads sharp or flat against another tuner

Check the reference pitch under Settings → Reference pitch; the standard is A4 = 440 Hz. You can measure your device's microphone with Settings → Check accuracy.

I don't feel a vibration when a string is in tune

Make sure "Vibrate when in tune" is on in Settings. iPad models have no vibration motor, and iPhones limit vibration while the microphone is recording, so the in-tune chime is the most reliable signal on Apple devices.

Ads

FretWise is free and shows a small banner under the lesson list and the metronome, and an occasional ad after you finish a lesson. The tuner never shows an ad, and no ad appears while a lesson is listening. Ads are non-personalised. In Europe, the UK and Switzerland you can change your ad choices under Settings → Ad privacy choices.
